I believe this is not a new term to most of the Web developer. There have been various sites, journals, articles and even news written to describe it. Though, to some, it is hard to improve the on how basically AJAX is. To some, it is a new term used in most of the web sites and application, which declared them as Web 2.0 compatible and even to some, it is a part of marketing gimmicks.
Breaking the abbreviation, AJAX stands for Asynchronous JavaScript and XML which refer to concept or technique on which employ the technology of JavaScript, Cascade Style Sheet (CSS) and XML to provide asynchronous responds and data presentation between server and client. Unchain the previous send and wait terms between a client (you yourself who is surfing) and server (the website you are browsing), AJAX is slowly changing the paradigm on how web content delivered.
Rather to investigate each and every existing technology element found in AJAX, it would be more of a better position to look into the pros and cons of this terms towards web design, web application, web development and web solution overall. Promises of faster respond, improving user interface and interaction rate, growing speed of processing to name a few are the promises deliveries of AJAX implementation. The race of improving web application and web deliveries towards desktop deliveries are on the match.
With more and more web re-invent through the wheel to adapt this new term into their web, it is presume, browsers will experience a shift of web usability experience soon. In some cases, AJAX has been made as an extra add-on module towards the existing web model. Some companies even provided such a business model that allows this AJAX small module to be attached to an existing web frame. On the other hand, the needs of AJAX implementation have crafted another chapters on critics. Criticizing on the incomplete and inconsistency of AJAX documentation, different developers would have come out with different standards. This resulted in complexity of standardization. The return of dominance of usability of Document Object Model (DOM) due to its bigger capabilities may also seem to be the next best issue on the awake of AJAX.
With the mention of the core elements; JavaScript, XML, XMLHttp and CSS, these are not often come in a package. In some famous Google AJAX employed application, only XMLHttp and JavaScript are used. Thus, the critics on ambiguity of AJAX term are hovering the mind of developer. In some supporter mind, it may be a logical shift of paradigm, but for some it maybe the lead of a bigger complexity in the world or peers.
Personally, I would agree with the benefits delivered by AJAX compatible application. With study on user interaction behavior, it is indeed and enhancement from the previous paradigm. Though, there are selected logic behind the critics arises. Individual opinion would be the same as the flock that standardization should be enhanced. Looking back with its grand dispute in the year of 2005, we will most probably see the consolidation of this technology in the near terms.
